The Book Club Ep.1

Welcome to The Book Club! It’s a space where I’ll be documenting what I’ve been reading and any great books I’d recommend. Hopefully, you’ll discover your next read here!

Here are three excellent books I’ve had enjoyed recently. You’ll find a summary and some of my thoughts about each.

Epitaph for a spy

epitaph for a spy by eric ambler cover

This is a quintessential example of what a spy novel should be all about. Eric Ambler (the author) lays out this twist on a classic murder mystery style story based in a French riviera.

Josef Vadassy, a Hungarian refugee and languages teacher, whilst holidaying in the South of France is falsely charged by the police for the possession of illegal photographs that aren’t his. To prove his innocence, he is given three days to identify the real spy who is lodging at his hotel. The reader is taken through a journey with the protagonist as he meets a series of eccentric hotel guests and attempts to distil who, hidden among them, is the true spy. A great summer read.

the code of the woosters by pg wodehouse cover

The Code of the Woosters

PG Wodehouse has created a brilliant comedy revolving around a series of unfortunate events taking Bertie Wooster and Jeeves on a journey to obtain an 18th-century cow creamer.

While initially sceptical due to the bizarre synopsis, this book has turned out to be one of the funniest I’ve read for a long time! Not only that but Wodehouse’s highly descriptive prose makes this an extremely joyful read. Rarely have I found myself beaming with such glee with each turn of a page. Would highly recommend.

The First 90 Days

The First 90 Days by Michael D. Watkins cover

Although having read this a while ago I’ve sneaked this in as I feel this makes a useful addition to this list given the current situation and with many people considering changing careers.

The First 90 Days lays out a roadmap to approaching any new role; what to think about, key people to identify and connect with, how to succeed in your new role and more. It’s a must read for anyone in, and preparing for, a career transition at any level. The implementation is the trickier bit!
